COFFEE TREE AND TEA LEAVES

For this project, I explored the efficacy of the drawing process as an indispensable tool for the generation, exploration, and refinement of ideas. The act of drawing allows designers to quickly and efficiently translate thoughts into meaningful marks on paper and explore their potential through a process of experimentation, revision, and refinement. From this I aspired to create a compelling series of art-inspired drawings to form part of an inspirational campaign calling attention to the store, Coffee Tree and Tea Leaves. This store offers a fresh and package-free way of buying coffee beans and loose teas.  I created 3 icons I felt encapsulated the meaning of the store and applied them to various communications vehicles.

MAYA LYNN ARTIST BOOK

Looking at the artist Maya Lynn I was inspired to design an artist’s book that embodied her style and works. Through research, conceptual development, and design I created a cohesive book that drives the viewer from page to page. The main concept of this book for me was borders and boundaries. This concept came directly from one of Lynn’s quotes “I’m always trying to find a balance between opposing forces, finding the place where opposites meet…. Existing not on either side, but on the line, that divides.” Using this I wanted to explore the individual elements of book and play with the balance between where they normally exist, allowing attention to be drawn to natural parts that can be overlooked.

ARTIST STICKERS

ARTIST STICKERS

The goal for this project was to create an experimental marketing campaign for The Roger Brown Study Collection that embodied the works of the Chicago Imagists. The Chicago Imagists were a group of artist in the 1960s that set out to create an individual art scene for the city of Chicago, separate from any other going on in the world. As a founding member, Roger Brown's former home houses many of the group's works and serves as a study of the collection for the city.

Taking iconic pieces of art from 3 of the Chicago Imagists I created a provoking and meaningful campaign aimed at observant people that like to explore the city of Chicago. By using stickers on the street it allows for easy placement and a less conventional style, which is representative of the Chicago Imagists aesthetic. The large central pieces of art were taken from; Roger Brown, Jim Nutt, Karl Wirsum, I then created hand type that incorporated the style of each piece of the work creating a balance between the two. I then placed these stickers around the city in places meaningful to these 3 artists, such as the location of their first art show, and the homes of each artist. This created a  unique, meaningful, and cost affective campaign for this creative group of people.

BEATLES RECORDS

Using nothing more than words I brought the lyrics of three iconic Beatles songs to life. This series of 3 foldout albums was created to truly embody the meaning and feel of each song's lyrics. Experimenting with the phonetic alphabet, I wanted to convey that these words were not meant to be read in your mind, but spoken aloud. The phonetic and english alphabet interact and create the mood for each album.

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE

This song was written by John Lennon and released as part of the Let It Be album in 1969. Classified as psychedelic folk music this song creates a dream like atmosphere. To conceptualize the song the cover features symbolism of space and stars, with the words and characters creating the night sky. The layout was a further representation of the lyrics drifting through space. The phonetic alphabet is featured in yellow while the English alphabet is pale blue allowing it to act as part of background.

COME TOGETHER

This song written by John Lennon was released in 1969 as a single and also appeared on the album Abbey Road. Initially written with political intentions, this song has also gained popularity with the conspiracy theory that Paul McCartney is dead. With this more somber, beat driven song I wanted to great the feeling of weight with the lyrics. By mirroring the phonetic alphabet with the English alphabet I created sound waves across the foldout that anchor your eye to the bottom.

LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS

This song was written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and released in 1967 on the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album. Written with inspiration from John’s son’s grade school drawing, this song takes you on twists and turns of a symbolic altered reality. The layout was meant to increase the psychedelic atmosphere with overlapping, winding, and weaving text. The overlapping text transparency creates different shades of blue alluding to diamonds or kaleidoscopes.
